Job Description
Head of Engineering building Emergence’s Egypt-based R&D Center of Excellence. Leading portfolio-wide engineering teams, standards, AI capabilities, and deployments across B2B software companies.
Responsibilities:
- Build the R&D Center of Excellence from its first hires into a multi-vertical engineering organization
- Lead engineers based in Egypt who are deployed into portfolio companies
- Define and enforce the quality bar for engineering talent and deployed engineers
- Own hiring judgment and scale an organization of versatile engineers
- Lead the forward-deployment model, including staffing, duration, and accountability
- Chair biweekly vertical forums with portfolio technical leaders, pod leads, and operating partners
- Set portfolio-wide standards for software development, testing, shipping, and observability
- Coach deployed engineers and improve the engineering practices of host teams
- Own and improve the path from ideation to production, including processes and infrastructure
- Build portfolio-wide capabilities in agent building, data and analytics, and automation
- Lead Emergence’s central engineering team, including architecture direction, technical review, and internal AI-driven tooling
- Serve as Emergence’s leading voice on AI and establish effective AI engineering guardrails
- Work with CEOs, CTOs, and operating partners to translate engineering needs into staffing, capabilities, and standards
- Own the economics of the deployment model with the managing partner
- Meet regularly with portfolio technical leaders to review engineer performance and required changes
Requirements:
- Deep technical background as a hands-on builder who has designed, built, and operated production systems
- Many years of experience designing, building, and operating production systems
- Track record of scaling teams, systems, and architecture
- Experience growing an engineering organization from a small team to dozens of engineers
- Experience leading multiple engineering teams simultaneously across more than one product, codebase, or company
- Experience influencing teams without direct control
- Demonstrated high bar for engineering talent, including hiring and making difficult performance decisions
- Experience building delivery processes and infrastructure to improve speed and safety
- Fluency in modern engineering practices and frequent, safe software delivery
- Current hands-on use of AI in engineering and a clear perspective on its future impact
- Experience across multiple programming languages, technology stacks, cloud environments, and domains such as data, automation, or agentic systems
- Clear, confident English
- Based in Egypt
- Ability to work an afternoon-to-evening Cairo schedule with heavy overlap into the US workday
- Ability to assess engineering quality across the listed languages, frameworks, data/AI technologies, cloud/infrastructure technologies, and domains
