Job Description

Senior Tax Research Analyst researching federal and state tax law for H&R Block. Creating accurate guidance, training materials, and software content for practitioners and clients.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct independent, in-depth research and analysis on complex federal and state tax matters
  • Support Tax Content Team initiatives to ensure tax content is accurate, timely, and helpful across multiple channels
  • Provide subject matter expertise for training, communications, media requests, and other tax-related projects
  • Analyze and document implications of proposed, enacted, or expiring tax legislation
  • Produce comprehensive materials on advanced tax topics
  • Develop and present tax law content for internal training sessions and external media engagements as needed
  • Partner across Tax Research, Product, Engineering, Learning, Communications, and Legal teams
  • Translate tax law into practical, user-focused guidance while improving content quality, usability, and operational efficiency
  • Research and evaluate current federal and state tax developments and prepare documentation and analysis
  • Create, update, and maintain tax content, practice aids, and technical resources
  • Interpret tax code, regulations, and case law; draw conclusions and make recommendations on tax treatment
  • Research current-year tax forms and document changes affecting H&R Block tax software products
  • Support rapid response efforts for significant tax law changes and filing-season developments
  • Monitor new tax developments and write analyses of tax law, rulings, case law, and regulations for internal departments, tax office associates, practitioners, and the general public
  • Research tax and financial issues and provide explanations, analysis, and recommendations
  • Plan, research, develop, and write tax-related research projects and training materials
  • Coordinate or assist with tax issue research and provide technical assistance to other departments and the research team

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or the equivalent through a combination of education and related work experience
  • 3-5 years minimum related work experience in tax preparation and/or tax research or similar
  • Ability to clearly explain complex tax situations
  • Ability to interpret, analyze, and correctly formulate solutions to highly complex tax situations
  • Strong written communication skills
  • Credential regulated under Circular 230 (Enrolled Agent, CPA, or Attorney) or Certified Financial Planner (CFP) credential
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively research complex tax issues and effectively communicate findings
  • Demonstrated critical, conceptual, intellectual, and problem-solving skills
  • Effective project management skills to complete assignments on time and within budget
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Knowledge of tax research principles, procedures, and techniques
  • Operational knowledge of tax law and regulations sufficient to understand and explain elements of personal, corporate, partnership, fiduciary, estate, gift, and international taxation
  • Writing skills to explain complex tax information in a clear manner and in plain language
  • Preferred: Knowledge of Federal and State tax administration to include litigation, tax compliance, and auditing
  • Preferred: 5 years of experience in tax preparation and/or tax research
