Job Description
Vice President leading state advocacy teams for Common Cause, a nonprofit focused on democracy and accountable government. Aligning state strategy, fundraising, policy advocacy, and organizational change across the lower 48 United States.
Responsibilities:
- Manage and support State Directors across several states to ensure programmatic, financial, and operational goals are met or exceeded
- Set goals collaboratively to align state, programmatic, and operational priorities
- Guide state teams in developing proactive and responsive strategies based on state political landscapes
- Build and maintain strong relationships with state teams
- Ensure sustainability and efficiency of state budgets and resource allocation
- Implement system and process improvements with State Directors and other teams
- Lead professional development and coaching efforts, including management under the collective bargaining agreement
- Support State Directors’ career progression, retention, and succession planning
- Represent and advocate for states’ work externally
- Build relationships with donors, policymakers, and coalition partners
- Speak to the media about Common Cause’s work as needed
- Develop public-facing materials and written communications with cross-organizational teams
- Align state strategy with Development team activities
- Support state fundraising goals, including drafting grants, fundraising materials, and grant reporting
- Lead organization-wide change initiatives
- Ensure collaboration, responsiveness, and accountability among state, program, and operations teams
- Build expertise in democracy and electoral policy
- Share state-level insights with organizational leadership to shape Common Cause’s overall strategy
Requirements:

- Ability to manage multiple short- and long-term priorities and deadlines with strong attention to detail and organization

- Openness to giving and receiving feedback and awareness of strengths and growth areas
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office, Slack, and Zoom
- Experience leading successful state-level or national issue-based advocacy campaigns
- Demonstrated experience with the legislative process in at least one state, including policy research and analysis, policy development, legislative drafting, legislative advocacy and lobbying, communications, and policy implementation
- Knowledge of political dynamics in at least one state, including decision-makers, partners, and funders
- Experience managing a team; experience managing other managers and coaching/training mid-level and senior staff ideally
- Track record of collaborative work and managing coalitions or diverse-interest groups
- Track record of leading organization-wide change initiatives
- Ability to travel up to a week per month for site visits, conferences, team retreats, and/or all-staff retreats
- Willingness to maintain a social media presence on behalf of Common Cause
- Must not currently hold elected office, run for office, serve on a political candidate’s Steering or Finance Committee, or be affiliated with political-party leadership
- Must be authorized to work in the United States; Common Cause cannot sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment visa
- Position is supervisory and excluded from the union-represented collective bargaining unit
