Job Description

Campaign and Media Director leading media, digital content, events, and data visualization for the Afghanistan War Commission. Shaping public communications around its final report to Congress.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and execute the Commission's national security-focused media messaging strategy, including social media engagement
  • Advise senior staff on the Government's use of social media platforms, including platform restrictions and data retention and preservation
  • Facilitate media engagement to promote the final report, releases, and events
  • Provide counsel on brand development, public positioning, visibility, reputation risk management, and media engagement
  • Research articles, reporters, and media outlets
  • Lead design and development of the AWC website and online presence using WordPress, UX/UI, web design, and large-scale data visualization
  • Manage AWC social media accounts and analyze performance
  • Prepare and execute digital newsletter and social media campaigns
  • Oversee video, digital, graphic, infographic, and final report production
  • Prepare press kits, background materials, press releases, talking points, and presentations
  • Plan and facilitate hearings, press conferences, interviews, podcasts, conferences, forums, roundtables, media availabilities, and other public events
  • Respond to media inquiries and schedule interviews
  • Provide media training for Commissioners and Commission staff
  • Monitor breaking news and provide response advice, media updates, and coverage analysis
  • Oversee charts, graphs, dashboards, timelines, maps, and other data visualizations
  • Manage visualization editing and validation and coordinate with the designated print report publisher

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Proficiency with WordPress platforms and interactive or illustrative approaches to large-scale data visualization
  • At least 6 years' demonstrated ability in media relations, content production (written, video, digital, graphic), event management, media training, and media analysis
  • Experience engaging the U.S. military, national security agencies, Congress, veterans communities, and national and international media
  • Knowledge of and connections within the Afghanistan War, military affairs, veterans affairs, and foreign policy communities
  • In-depth understanding of national security and foreign policy audiences
  • Command of current communications technologies and best practices
