Job Description
Mathematical physicist creating, solving, reviewing, and auditing research-level physics problems. Supporting Mercor’s frontier AI training through rigorous mathematical reasoning and symbolic computation.
Responsibilities:
- Work on research-level physics problems in the worker's own subfield
- Create, solve, review, or audit physics problems depending on publication record and matched research area
- Produce complete written reasoning that another specialist can independently follow and verify
- Work on assignments involving special functions, integrable systems, permutation combinatorics for random tensor network entanglement, or conformal geometry
- Apply relevant mathematical and computational methods, including symbolic computation
- Complete an application form covering education, research experience, method self-attestation, and best-fit areas
- Provide arXiv IDs or DOIs, author position, and demonstrated methods for selected areas
- Participate in onboarding or a short live alignment call if invited
- Complete a 30–45 minute assessment if required
- Collaborate with leading researchers on projects training and enhancing AI systems
Requirements:
- PhD in mathematical physics, theoretical physics, or mathematics (hard requirement)
- Postdoctoral researchers, research scientists, and junior faculty are strongest fits
- Senior PhD students with a strong first-author record may apply
- Published work on the specific listed phenomena, not adjacent topics
- Verifiable publication record with three to five representative papers, including arXiv IDs or DOIs; first author strongly preferred
- Ability to demonstrate relevant methods in own publications
- Working proficiency with LaTeX, Python, SymPy, and Jupyter
- Some familiarity with an agentic coding extension in VS Code is useful; gaps are acceptable if declared honestly
- English at B2 level or above, including written reasoning
- Availability for 10 hours per week across an 8 to 10 week window, starting immediately
- Independent contractor engagement
- Unable to support H1-B or STEM OPT candidates
- Must provide author position and methods demonstrated for each selected research area
- Research areas include special functions, integrable systems, permutation combinatorics for random tensor network entanglement, and conformal geometry
Benefits:
- Flexible schedule with no fixed hours
- Fully remote work
- Weekly payments via Stripe or Wise based on services rendered
- Projects may be extended, shortened, or concluded early depending on needs and performance
- Competitive pay
- Opportunity to collaborate with leading researchers
- Opportunity to help shape the next generation of AI systems
- Reasonable accommodations upon request
- Up to $440 referral payment for successful referrals
