Job Description
Technical Writer documenting Percona’s open-source PostgreSQL database distribution. Creating guides, manuals, troubleshooting content, and docs-as-code materials for technical customers.
Responsibilities:
- Create technical documentation including installation, configuration, troubleshooting, and how-to guides, user manuals, man pages, and --help prompts
- Participate in team ceremonies
- Collaborate with the Engineering Manager, Product Manager, developers, and QA to produce high-quality documentation
- Use text, Markdown, images, and diagrams to make documentation valuable for audiences of all experience levels
- Leverage AI tooling to draft, polish, format, and refine content
- Maintain documentation versioning
- Contribute to the overall documentation strategy
- Work on PostgreSQL and related components within a distributed open-source software development team
- Represent Percona's voice to technical customers
- Develop complete, clear documentation for Percona PostgreSQL products
- Communicate and collaborate through Slack, Zoom, Jira, forums, and team rituals
- Write documentation for new features, guides, bug fixes, and release notes
- Participate in technical discussions and planning sessions
- Draft blog posts and contribute to upstream documentation
- Research and learn new technologies
- Occasionally attend conferences or in-person meetups
Requirements:
- Graduate-level written English and excellent verbal communication skills
- Experience documenting complex systems and writing user-oriented documentation
- 3+ years of experience as a technical writer
- Ability to write high-quality and precise documentation
- Experience with markup languages, preferably Markdown
- Experience installing and configuring database server software on Linux
- Docs-as-code experience
- Knowledge of Jenkins, Git, Markdown, HTML, and/or JavaScript strongly recommended
- Experience leveraging AI tooling for documentation purposes
- Comfortable with the Linux command line
- Distributed system development and/or database server development experience
- Fluency with developer tools such as Git, GCC, and GDB
- Ability to work autonomously in a globally distributed organization
- Experience collaborating with open source communities and colleagues via mailing lists, Slack, and similar tools
- Experience using collaboration/tracking tools such as Jira and Notion
- Proven success working in a distributed environment
- Quick learner and great team player
- A developer or DevOps background is a differentiator
- Track record contributing to PostgreSQL or other open source projects is a differentiator
- Active PostgreSQL community membership is a differentiator
- Solid understanding of PostgreSQL internals is a differentiator
- Working knowledge of database storage engines, at-rest encryption, and cloud orchestration is a differentiator
- Ability to build and maintain automated documentation testing, CI/CD pipelines, and validation tools is a differentiator
- Conference speaking, technical blogging, and public forum or mailing-list activity are differentiators
