Job Description
Civic partnerships director expanding CalMatters’ free nonprofit journalism and Digital Democracy tool across California communities. Building trusted organizational partnerships, trainings, events, and audience reach statewide.
Responsibilities:
- Map California organizations to build a pipeline of prospective partners
- Work with the newsroom to identify communities each project needs to reach and prioritize outreach
- Build and maintain partners’ trust, including meeting them in person across California
- Design and lead trainings on Digital Democracy and other tools
- Develop materials for partners’ newsletters and social channels
- Co-host events with partner organizations and collaborate with the events team
- Track and report partner engagement, sharing activity, feedback, and audience reach
- Gather partner feedback and improve support strategies
- Represent CalMatters at conferences, convenings, and community events across California
- Report to the Chief Impact Officer and work closely with the Director of Partnerships
Requirements:
- At least 4 years of relevant experience building and managing relationships with a wide range of organizations
- Experience in community organizing, nonprofit partnerships, government relations, coalition-building, business development, sales, or adjacent fields
- Willingness to start relationships cold
- Ability to learn a data-driven tool deeply enough to teach it; technical background not required
- Comfort designing and leading trainings
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to explain tools and journalism to a non-journalism audience
- Ability to navigate requests while adhering to CalMatters' nonpartisanship and journalism ethics
- Experience setting and tracking meaningful success metrics, including data held by partners
- Genuine interest in California civic life, government accountability, or community engagement
- Experience working independently in a remote-first, distributed team
- Willingness to travel regularly across California
- A college degree is not required
- Preferred/plus: newsroom experience or understanding of how journalism is made
- Preferred/plus: familiarity with CalMatters
- Preferred/plus: existing relationships with California community organizations, civic groups, or regional networks
- Preferred/plus: Spanish or another language widely spoken in California communities
- Preferred/plus: public-facing event organizing or co-hosting experience
