Job Description
Part-time French telephone interpreter for LanguageLine Solutions, facilitating accurate English-French communication. Providing remote consecutive interpretation and customer service from anywhere in the United Kingdom.
Responsibilities:
- Render accurate and complete meaning between source and target languages in consecutive interpretation
- Facilitate communication between English speakers and speakers of another language
- Interpret verbal messages accurately and completely for clients and limited-English-proficiency customers
- Maintain impartiality, neutrality, confidentiality, and correct interpreting protocol
- Manage call flow and avoid taking over calls
- Demonstrate cultural sensitivity and understanding of both languages
- Provide excellent customer service using appropriate tone, patience, and courtesy
- Apply industry-specific terminology and protocols in medical, court, insurance, and government contexts
- Follow LanguageLine Solutions' interpreting guidelines and procedures
- Maintain positive working relationships with the Contractor Liaison, Interpreter Resource Centre, and other departments
- Demonstrate dependability and uphold professional and ethical standards
Requirements:
- Superior proficiency in English and French
- In-depth understanding of the cultural dynamics of both languages
- Large vocabulary including synonyms, idiomatic expressions, proverbs and quotations
- Accurate comprehension and expression in both languages across subjects of varying complexity
- Mastery of correct word order and proper grammar
- Clear enunciation, pronunciation, and professional tone in both languages
- Competency in medical, financial, insurance, courts and tribunals, police, and/or government agency terminology, procedures, and products
- Consecutive interpretation with a high degree of accuracy
- Knowledge of interpretation methods and procedures
- Neutrality toward clients and limited-English speakers
- Ability to speak clearly without accent interference
- Cognitive ability to understand and express information quickly
- Ability to concentrate and follow conversations for extended periods
- Ability to remember and accurately deliver blocks of information
- Confidentiality and ethical standards
- Flexibility, professionalism, emotional composure, and objectivity
- Dependability, honesty, integrity, and trustworthiness
- Professional customer service demeanor and courtesy
- Bachelor's and/or Master's degree in Languages, Translation, Interpretation, Philology, Linguistics, or related fields (preferred)
- Ph.D. or Doctoral degree in Languages, Philology, Linguistics, or related fields (preferred)
- NRPSI, DPSI, Metropolitan Police Test, CLI2, CLI3, or Certificate of Higher Education in a relevant field (preferred)
- Experience in written translation and/or interpretation, localization, bilingual publishing, media organizations, schools, or similar bilingual settings
- Experience living and/or studying in a bilingual environment
- One year of work experience in relevant industries (preferred)
