Job Description
Part-time Mandarin telephone interpreter providing accurate consecutive interpretation for LanguageLine Solutions clients. Working from home anywhere in the United Kingdom.
Responsibilities:
- Render accurate and complete meaning between source and target languages in consecutive interpretation
- Facilitate communication between English speakers and speakers of another language
- Interpret verbal messages for LanguageLine Solutions' clients and customers with limited English proficiency
- Remain impartial and unbiased while following correct protocol
- Recognize and respond sensitively to cultural differences
- Manage call flow without taking over the call
- Avoid interacting with the limited-English speaker without client permission
- Follow LanguageLine Solutions' interpreting guidelines and procedures
- Use industry-specific terminology and protocol, including medical, court, insurance, and government terminology
- Provide excellent customer service through appropriate tone, patience, and courtesy
- Maintain positive working relationships with the Contractor Liaison, Interpreter Resource Centre, and other departments
Requirements:
- Superior proficiency in English and Mandarin
- In-depth understanding of the cultural dynamics of both languages
- Accuracy in both languages and comprehension of subjects at varying levels of complexity
- Mastery of correct word order, grammar, pronunciation, and professional forms of expression
- Competency in terminology, procedures, and/or products in industries including Medical, Financial, Insurance, Courts & Tribunals, Police, and Government Agencies
- Consecutive interpretation with a high degree of accuracy
- Knowledge of interpretation methods and procedures
- Neutrality toward the client and limited English speaker
- Ability to speak clearly without accent interference
- Ability to concentrate and follow conversations for extended periods
- Ability to remember and accurately deliver blocks of information
- Confidentiality and adherence to ethical standards
- Professionalism, flexibility, emotional composure, objectivity, dependability, honesty, integrity, and trustworthiness
- Customer service skills, including sensitivity, politeness, and courtesy
- Preferred: one year of work experience in industries for which LanguageLine Solutions provides interpretation
- Experience in written translation and/or interpretation, localization, bilingual publishing, media organizations, schools, and/or similar bilingual settings
- Experience living and/or studying in a bilingual environment
- Educational credentials and qualifications listed as preferred: Bachelor's and/or Master's degree in Languages, Translation, Interpretation, Philology, Linguistics, or related fields; Ph.D. or Doctoral degree in related fields; NRPSI; DPSI; Metropolitan Police Test; CLI2; CLI3; Certificate of Higher Education in Translation, Interpretation, Languages, Philology, or Linguistics
